Does dehydration cause painful urination?

When you drink too little or lose fluid through heat, fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea, urine may become darker and more concentrated. Passing it can feel irritating or uncomfortable. Painful urination can also occur with a urinary infection, irritation from products, a sexually transmitted infection, stones, or inflammation. Dehydration should not be assumed to be the explanation, particularly when burning persists or there is frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal pain, blood, discharge, or fever.

Sip water regularly and avoid heat and alcohol while you monitor the symptom. Do not force large amounts of fluid, especially if a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Avoid scented soaps or products that may irritate the area. Arrange a medical assessment if pain continues, returns, or comes with urinary frequency, urgency, fever, back pain, blood, discharge, or pregnancy. A urine test and other checks may be needed before treatment is chosen.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with back or side pain, vomiting, visible blood in urine, inability to pass urine, severe pain, confusion, or marked weakness. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for painful urination during pregnancy, in a child, or in someone with significant immune or kidney problems. These features can signal a problem that needs more than rehydration.
