Does dandruff cause oily scalp?

Scalp oil mixes with shed skin cells and can make flakes look larger, sticky, or yellowish. The oily environment may also support the yeast associated with dandruff, which can contribute to irritation and visible scale. This does not mean every oily scalp has dandruff. Product buildup, infrequent washing, hormonal changes, or naturally active oil glands may cause greasiness without the typical flaking or irritation.

Wash as often as needed to keep the scalp comfortable, using a mild cleanser or an anti-dandruff shampoo if scale is present. Massage the product into the scalp gently, rinse thoroughly, and avoid aggressive scrubbing. Keep heavy oils and styling products away from the roots when they increase buildup. Change one product at a time so you can tell whether a new cleanser improves or aggravates the scalp.

See a clinician if greasiness is accompanied by thick scale, marked redness, pain, crusting, sores, or hair loss, or if symptoms persist after appropriate shampoo use. A scalp examination can distinguish dandruff from seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, or another cause and guide treatment.
