Does croup cause fever?

Croup is commonly linked to an infection affecting the upper airway. Fever may appear with the barking cough, hoarse voice, runny nose, or reduced appetite. The fever itself does not show how severe the airway swelling is, so breathing and alertness matter as much as the temperature. Other infections can also cause fever and cough, which is why the full pattern is useful to a clinician.

Encourage rest and offer regular fluids. Dress the child comfortably rather than using heavy layers, and measure temperature with a suitable thermometer if the child feels hot. Keep the child calm if coughing or noisy breathing occurs. Use fever medicine only as directed for the child’s age and weight, and never combine products that contain the same ingredient. A clinician can advise when an examination or prescription treatment is needed.

Get urgent help for difficult or fast breathing, stridor while resting, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, drooling with trouble swallowing, or inability to drink. Seek medical advice if the fever persists, the child is becoming less responsive, or symptoms are worsening. Breathing distress takes priority over the fever reading.

Ask whether the fever and cough fit croup, how often to check temperature and breathing, and which fever medicine is appropriate. Ask what change would mean the child needs same-day review or emergency care.
