Does contact dermatitis cause skin blisters?

Contact with an irritant or allergen can inflame the skin and create small vesicles or larger blisters. They may itch, sting, feel sore, or sit on a red, swollen, or scaly patch. The location often reflects contact with a product, plant, chemical, adhesive, metal, shoe, or another material.

A blister can break and leave a moist or crusted surface. Other problems, including infection, burns, insect reactions, and some blistering skin disorders, can look similar. A clinician should assess blisters that are extensive, recurrent, painful, or difficult to explain.

Remove the suspected trigger and rinse exposed skin gently, unless a chemical exposure requires specific emergency instructions. Do not deliberately pop a blister; the intact roof helps protect the area. Cover it loosely with a clean, non-stick dressing if it may rub against clothing or footwear, and change the dressing when wet or dirty.

Wash hands before touching the area and avoid fragranced products on broken skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on itch or inflammation treatment after examining the blister and checking whether infection is present.

Seek medical assessment if blisters are spreading, painful, recurrent, infected-looking, or present on the eyes, mouth, or genitals. Prompt care is needed for pus, increasing warmth, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat after an exposure.
