Does common cold cause sore throat?

Cold viruses can irritate the throat directly, while mucus draining from the nose can add to the irritation. The discomfort may feel dry, scratchy, or painful when swallowing. A cold may also cause a runny nose, cough, sneezing, or tiredness. Sore throat has other causes, including allergies, irritation, and infections that need different treatment, so the symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Sip warm or cool fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe adults and older children who can gargle safely without swallowing it. Rest your voice and use a humidifier if dry air makes the throat feel worse. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief, particularly if you are pregnant or take regular medicines.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have trouble breathing, develop swelling in the mouth or neck, or become unusually drowsy. Contact a clinician if the pain is severe, symptoms worsen, fever persists, or you develop a rash, pus on the tonsils, or difficulty opening your mouth. A child who is not drinking or urinating normally needs prompt assessment.
