Does common cold cause nosebleed?

The front part of the nose contains delicate blood vessels close to the surface. A cold can leave the lining inflamed and dry, while repeated wiping, forceful blowing, or nose picking can disturb it. Dry indoor air may make irritation worse. A nosebleed can have other causes, including injury, nasal sprays, or medicines that affect clotting, so frequent episodes need individual assessment.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward, and breathe through your mouth. Pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for several minutes without checking too soon. Spitting out blood helps prevent swallowing it. Once bleeding stops, avoid forceful blowing, heavy exertion, hot drinks, and nose picking for a while. Saline spray or a suitable nasal moisturiser may reduce dryness; ask a pharmacist if you take blood-thinning medicine.

Obtain urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes faintness, or does not stop after sustained pressure. Arrange an appointment for repeated nosebleeds, easy bruising, or bleeding from other sites. A clinician can check the nasal lining, medicines, and blood pressure when appropriate.
