Do cold sores cause skin blisters?

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus and commonly begin with tingling, burning, or itching. Small fluid-filled blisters then appear, often close together on the lip or nearby skin. They may rupture, form a crust, and settle over time. The virus can spread while blisters or sores are present.

Skin blisters have many possible causes, including irritation, allergy, burns, eczema, and other infections. Therefore, a blister outside the usual pattern or one with unusual symptoms needs an examination rather than an assumption about its cause.

Avoid touching or popping the blisters, wash your hands after contact, and do not share lip products, towels, cups, or utensils while the sore is active. Avoid kissing and oral contact until the area has healed. A clinician may recommend antiviral treatment, especially when started early or when outbreaks are severe or frequent.

Keep the area clean and use a simple protective product if advised. If you have a weakened immune system, are pregnant, or the sore is near the eye, seek medical advice promptly.

Get urgent medical help for eye pain, light sensitivity, a blister near the eye, confusion, severe headache, widespread blisters, or difficulty drinking. Arrange a review if the diagnosis is uncertain, sores are unusually painful, they keep returning, or healing is delayed.
