Does chondrosarcoma cause persistent bone pain?

Chondrosarcoma begins in cartilage-producing cells and can develop near bones. Pain may feel deep, remain in one area, or become more noticeable at night or with activity. A lump, swelling, reduced movement, or pressure on nearby tissue can occur depending on the tumour's location.

Pain does not establish the diagnosis. Clinicians consider its location, duration, change over time, injury history, and examination findings. Assessment may involve imaging and, when needed, a tissue sample planned by a specialist. The safest test sequence depends on the body region involved.

Arrange a medical review when bone pain persists, returns without a clear injury, disturbs sleep, or limits normal movement. Note where it occurs, what worsens or eases it, and whether swelling or a firm area is present. Use only pain relief advised for you, especially if other medicines or health conditions are involved.

Get urgent help for sudden severe pain after a minor movement, inability to use a limb, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly increasing swelling. These signs can reflect a structural or nerve problem needing prompt assessment, regardless of the eventual cause.
