Does chikungunya cause fever?

Chikungunya is an infection spread by infected mosquitoes. Fever may begin suddenly and can occur alongside joint pain, muscle aches, headache, tiredness or a rash. Fever alone cannot identify the cause, because many infections can raise body temperature. A clinician may consider your symptoms, recent travel or mosquito exposure, and how the illness developed.

Rest and drink fluids regularly, especially if sweating or eating less than usual. Wear light clothing and keep the room comfortably cool. Check your temperature with the same method when you need to monitor a change. Avoid mosquito bites while unwell by using screens, repellents and covered clothing, since mosquitoes can acquire the virus from an infected person. Use only medicines suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician’s advice.

Arrange medical advice if fever is severe, keeps returning, or is accompanied by worsening joint pain, a spreading rash or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, a seizure, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or unusual bleeding. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a long-term condition may need earlier assessment.
