Does chest X-ray treat bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis involves widened, damaged airways that can collect mucus. A chest X-ray may show changes in the lungs or suggest another explanation for cough and repeated infections, but it may not show every airway detail. A clinician may choose a CT scan when a more detailed view is needed. The X-ray itself uses images, not medicine, so it cannot clear mucus, control inflammation, or repair airway damage.

Arrange a clinical review if bronchiectasis is suspected or symptoms keep returning. Your clinician may assess cough, sputum, breathing, chest infections and previous scans, then decide whether you need mucus-clearance techniques, inhaled treatment, antibiotics for a bacterial flare, or specialist input. Follow the plan for airway clearance and seek advice before changing prescribed medicines.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, or coughing up a large amount of blood. Contact a clinician promptly if fever, increasing sputum, a change in sputum colour, or worsening breathlessness suggests a chest infection.
