Can cervical polyps cause bleeding after sex?

A cervical polyp is a small growth arising from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Many polyps cause no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they can include bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after menopause. Discharge may also be present.

Bleeding after sex can also happen because of vaginal dryness, irritation, inflammation, infection, changes on the cervix, or other gynaecological conditions. The pattern, amount, timing, pregnancy status, and stage of life help a clinician work out what needs checking.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist or other qualified clinician if this bleeding is new, repeats, or has not been assessed. They may ask about your periods, contraception, pregnancy possibility, pain, discharge, and medicines, then examine the vagina and cervix. A cervical polyp may be visible during this examination.

Depending on the findings, the clinician may recommend testing for infection, cervical screening when due, or removal of the polyp. Removed tissue can be sent for laboratory assessment. Until you are assessed, note when bleeding happens, how long it lasts, and whether it follows penetration or occurs at other times.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or does not settle, or if it comes with severe pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant or could be pregnant and have bleeding or pain. Bleeding after menopause should also be assessed without delay.
