Does cervical ectropion cause bleeding after sex?

Cervical ectropion occurs when softer cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer cervix. These cells contain small blood vessels and can be more easily disturbed by penetration, examination, or vaginal discharge. Ectropion is a benign finding, but bleeding after sex also has other possible causes, including infection, dryness, polyps, and cervical cell changes.

A clinician can inspect the cervix and decide whether testing is needed. They may ask about contraception, pregnancy, pain, discharge, and your cervical screening history. The appearance of ectropion does not remove the need to investigate new or persistent bleeding.

Arrange an appointment if bleeding after sex is new, recurrent, or troubling. Note whether it follows every episode or only certain types of contact, and report pain, odour, itching, or discharge. Use lubrication if friction or dryness may be contributing, and avoid irritating vaginal products.

Many people with ectropion do not need treatment. If bleeding continues and other causes have been excluded, a clinician can discuss options that treat the exposed area. Do not start treatment without an examination.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe lower abdominal pain, faintness, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. These warning signs need prompt assessment even when cervical ectropion has previously been seen.
