Does cervical cerclage treat preterm labour?

A cerclage is a stitch around the cervix intended to provide support when early opening is a concern. Established preterm labour involves contractions and cervical change, and needs urgent maternity assessment. A stitch already in place may need a specific plan if labour starts, because the cervix must be assessed and the stitch may need removal.

Whether cerclage is suitable depends on the pregnancy history, cervical findings, contractions, bleeding, infection, and membrane status. It is not appropriate in every situation and does not replace evaluation of contractions or fluid leakage.

If you have symptoms of possible preterm labour, contact your maternity unit immediately and explain how far along the pregnancy is, how often contractions occur, and whether fluid or blood is present. Do not arrange a cerclage without specialist assessment.

Seek urgent maternity care for repeated tightenings, period-like cramps, pelvic pressure, backache, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, fever, or a noticeable change in discharge. Early assessment helps the team check the cervix and membranes and plan appropriate care.

Ask whether your symptoms indicate labour, whether a cerclage is safe or useful, what monitoring is needed, and what happens if contractions begin with a stitch in place.
