Does cellulitis cause fever?

Cellulitis affects the skin and tissue below it. The affected area often becomes red or darker, warm, swollen, and sore; fever, chills, and feeling generally unwell can occur alongside these local changes. A fever has many possible causes and does not on its own establish cellulitis. Likewise, cellulitis can be present without fever. A clinician considers the skin findings, how quickly symptoms developed, recent injury or skin breaks, and other possible sources of infection.

Get medical advice the same day when a tender, warm, spreading skin area occurs with fever. Avoid delaying care while trying home treatments. If antibiotics are prescribed, take the full course as instructed and follow the plan for pain relief, rest, fluids, and skin care. It may be useful to mark the outer edge of redness with a pen if advised, so changes are easier to describe. Report any spread, new blisters, or worsening illness.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, confusion, fainting, persistent vomiting, breathing difficulty, or profound weakness. People with reduced immune function, poor circulation, or diabetes should contact a clinician promptly for possible cellulitis, because infection can be harder to manage.

Ask whether the skin changes fit cellulitis, whether a wound or another source needs attention, and when improvement should be reviewed. Ask what specific changes mean you should return sooner or seek urgent help.
