Does brucellosis cause joint pain?

Brucellosis is an infection that can affect the whole body. Inflammation may cause aching, stiffness, or tenderness in joints, often involving the lower back, hips, knees, or other large joints. The discomfort can come and go and may be accompanied by feeling unwell. Joint symptoms can also have many unrelated causes, so this symptom alone cannot identify brucellosis.

Arrange a medical assessment if joint pain continues, follows a fever, or occurs after contact with livestock, animal tissue, or unpasteurised dairy products. Tell the clinician about travel, food exposures, work activities, and when the pain began. Testing and treatment should be guided by a clinician; do not start leftover antibiotics. Rest, gentle movement, fluids, and a suitable pain reliever may help while you wait, if these are safe for you.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a hot swollen joint, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or a severe headache with fever. Prompt assessment is also sensible when fever and joint pain persist or make walking difficult, because some infections require timely treatment.
