Does bronchiectasis cause coughing up phlegm?

Bronchiectasis changes the shape and clearance of some airways. Mucus can remain there instead of moving out efficiently, leading to a productive cough. Phlegm may be clear, white, yellow, or green, and its amount can change during a chest infection or flare-up.

A change in colour does not by itself prove that antibiotics are needed. A clinician considers your breathing, temperature, chest symptoms, previous flare-ups, and overall condition before choosing treatment.
