Does bone metastases cause persistent bone pain?

Cancer deposits in bone can disrupt normal bone renewal, irritate nearby structures and reduce bone strength. Pain may develop at one site or in several areas.

The discomfort may be a deep ache that persists at rest, interrupts sleep or becomes sharper with movement. Pain in a weight-bearing bone can worsen when standing or walking. Back pain may occur when vertebrae are affected.

Not every pain in a person with cancer comes from bone metastases. Muscle strain, joint conditions, treatment effects and other illnesses remain possible, so a change in pain should be described to the oncology team.

Tell the cancer team about new pain, a change in its location or character, pain that breaks through prescribed medicine, and any effect on sleep or mobility. Keep a short record of triggers, severity, medicines taken and the relief obtained.

Treatment can address both the pain and the affected bone. Options depend on the original cancer, the bones involved, fracture risk and other health needs. Do not increase prescribed pain medicine or begin supplements without checking the plan with the treating team.

Call the oncology team urgently for sudden severe pain, a new inability to bear weight or use a limb, or pain following a minor movement or fall. These changes can signal a fracture in weakened bone.

Go for emergency assessment if back or neck pain occurs with new weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Possible spinal cord compression needs rapid evaluation.

Ask whether the painful bone needs imaging, whether there is a fracture or spinal cord risk, and which movement is safe. Discuss how quickly the chosen treatment should affect pain and whom to contact if symptoms worsen outside clinic hours.
