Do boils cause painful skin?

A boil is a deeper, pus-filled infection around a hair follicle. The surrounding inflammation can make the skin feel sore, warm, tight, or throbbing. Pain may increase when clothing rubs the area or when the lump grows. A boil can occur on the face, neck, armpit, groin, buttocks, or thigh. Painful skin has many possible causes, so soreness by itself does not identify a boil.

The centre may soften as pus collects, and the area can develop a visible white or yellow point. Do not squeeze or pierce it, because pressure can push infection into nearby tissue or spread germs to another person.

Apply a clean, warm, damp cloth for a short period several times through the day. Keep the area clean, cover any drainage with a fresh dressing, wash your hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels or razors. Over-the-counter pain relief may be suitable for some people when used exactly as the label directs; check with a pharmacist if you have a medical condition or take other medicines.

A clinician may need to examine a large, deep, recurrent, or slow-healing boil. Treatment can involve drainage or prescription medicine, depending on its location and your health.

Arrange prompt medical advice if redness spreads, pain is rapidly worsening, fever or chills develop, red streaks appear, or the boil is near the eye, nose, spine, or genitals. Seek earlier assessment if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or repeated boils. Urgent care is appropriate if you feel very unwell or the swelling affects vision, breathing, or swallowing.

Ask whether the lump needs drainage, whether the surrounding redness suggests spreading infection, how to dress the area, and what might explain repeated boils. You can also ask which pain medicine is safe with your current medicines and when you should return if the pain does not settle.
