Can boils cause skin lumps?

A boil may feel firm and sore at first, then become red, warm, and more raised. Pus can collect beneath the skin, and nearby redness may expand. Several boils can join into a deeper area of inflammation. Other skin lumps include cysts, inflamed follicles, and non-infectious growths, so a lump’s texture or location is not enough to establish its cause.

Wash gently, keep the lump covered if it drains, and wash your hands after touching the area. A warm, clean compress may ease discomfort. Avoid pressing, cutting, or popping it, and do not share towels, clothing, or shaving equipment. A clinician should assess a large, recurring, deep, or persistent lump and can choose suitable treatment.

Get prompt medical advice if redness spreads, pain becomes severe, fever or chills develop, red streaks appear, or the lump is close to the eye, nose, or breast. Seek urgent help if you are unusually weak or seriously unwell. Repeated lumps also deserve assessment for an underlying skin problem.

Ask whether the lump has features of a boil, whether a sample or drainage is needed, how to reduce spread at home, and how recurring lesions should be investigated.
