Does blood pressure medication help with headache?

Many headaches are unrelated to blood pressure and may follow migraine, tension, dehydration, infection, poor sleep, or another trigger. High blood pressure often causes no symptoms, so a headache alone cannot show that pressure is elevated. Some people may notice headache after starting or changing a medicine, while others improve as their pressure comes under control.

Take your medicine according to the prescribed schedule and do not take an extra dose to treat head pain. If possible, check your blood pressure using a validated monitor and record the reading, timing, symptoms, and medicines taken. A clinician can decide whether the headache needs a separate treatment or whether the blood pressure plan needs review.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, vision loss, chest pain, or breathlessness. A severe headache with very high blood pressure readings also needs urgent assessment, especially if it is new or unlike your usual headaches.
