Does bladder cancer cause difficulty passing urine?

A tumour or irritation near the bladder outlet can make the stream weak, delayed, interrupted, or harder to start. You may also feel that the bladder has not emptied, need to urinate more often, or experience burning. These symptoms overlap with benign prostate enlargement and urinary infection, so the symptom pattern alone cannot establish the cause.

Book a medical review if a new change in urine flow persists, keeps returning, or occurs with blood, pain, or increased frequency. A clinician may examine you, review medicines and bowel symptoms, test a urine sample, and check how well the bladder empties. Record when the difficulty began and whether the stream changes during the day.

Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine at all, develop severe lower abdominal pain, or become feverish and unwell with urinary symptoms. Sudden inability to urinate can cause painful bladder pressure and requires prompt treatment. Seek emergency care for fainting, confusion, or severe weakness.

Ask which causes fit your symptoms, whether you need a bladder scan or specialist review, and what to do if urine flow stops. Ask whether any current medicine, constipation, or prostate problem could be contributing.
