Does benign prostatic hyperplasia cause urinary urgency?

Urgency may come with frequency, night-time urination, a weak stream, or difficulty starting. You might feel that you must go immediately even when little urine passes. Urine infection, bladder irritation, excess caffeine, and other conditions can produce a similar sensation, so urgency does not by itself establish prostate enlargement.

Keep a brief bladder diary showing drinks, timing, urgency, leakage, and urine volume, then share it at an appointment. A clinician can review your stream and medicines, test for infection when needed, and assess whether urine remains after you void. Limiting caffeine and spacing fluids earlier in the day may reduce triggers without causing dehydration.

Seek urgent help for inability to pass urine, severe lower-abdominal pain, fever or chills, visible blood in urine, or sudden confusion. Contact a clinician promptly if urgency is accompanied by burning, back pain, vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask whether infection or prostate-related obstruction should be tested, how your medicines may influence urgency, and whether bladder training or treatment could help. Mention any leakage, pain, changes in stream, and night-time disruption.
