Does Barrett's oesophagus cause persistent indigestion?

Barrett's oesophagus is a change in the lining of the lower oesophagus associated with long-term acid reflux. Some people have reflux symptoms such as heartburn or acid coming up, while the lining change itself is identified by an examination rather than symptoms alone.

Indigestion can include upper abdominal discomfort, burning behind the breastbone, belching, nausea, or feeling full quickly. These experiences overlap with reflux, but they can also occur with other digestive problems, medicines, and eating patterns.

A clinician may review how long symptoms have lasted, their relation to meals or lying down, and whether swallowing has changed. When Barrett's oesophagus needs confirmation or monitoring, a camera examination of the oesophagus and tissue sampling may be discussed.

Arrange a clinical review if indigestion persists, keeps returning, changes from its usual pattern, or is not controlled by the treatment you were advised to use. Record triggers, swallowing difficulties, night symptoms, medicines, and any vomiting or weight change.

Take reflux medicine exactly as directed rather than changing the dose on your own. Smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and reducing personal food or drink triggers may ease reflux symptoms, but symptom relief does not show whether the oesophageal lining has changed.

Seek prompt medical assessment for food sticking, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomit containing blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent loss of appetite, or worsening upper abdominal or chest discomfort. These features need evaluation regardless of the cause.

Call emergency services for severe or sudden chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Do not assume new chest pain is indigestion.

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether any medicines could be contributing, and whether an endoscopy is appropriate. If Barrett's oesophagus is diagnosed, clarify the treatment plan, how the lining will be monitored, which symptom changes to report, and how to take acid-suppressing medicine.
