Does Baker's Cyst Cause Knee Swelling?

A Baker's Cyst forms when fluid from the knee joint pushes into a small space behind the knee. You may notice fullness or a soft lump there, while the whole knee can also look puffy if the joint is producing extra fluid. Swelling may feel more obvious when standing and may become uncomfortable when the knee is fully bent. Arthritis, injury, or inflammation can contribute to the fluid build-up, which means the cyst may be a sign of an underlying knee issue rather than the only problem.

A cyst can sometimes leak or rupture, causing swelling and discomfort that extend into the calf. Because similar symptoms can occur with a blood clot or infection, a sudden change should be checked promptly.

Temporarily avoid movements that increase pressure or swelling, such as deep squats or kneeling. Gentle walking and comfortable range-of-motion exercises may help prevent stiffness. Elevating the leg when resting and applying a wrapped cold pack for brief periods can ease symptoms. A clinician may assess the knee and the area behind it, then address the joint irritation that is driving the fluid accumulation.

Book an assessment if swelling is persistent, repeatedly returns, or makes it difficult to bend the knee or walk. Seek urgent care if the calf suddenly becomes swollen, hot, red, or very painful, or if you develop breathlessness or chest pain. Do not assume these changes are simply a Baker's Cyst; urgent causes need to be ruled out.

Ask whether the swelling is mainly inside the knee, behind it, or both, and what may be causing the extra fluid. It is also useful to ask whether an examination or scan is needed, which activities to pause, and how the underlying joint problem can be managed.
