Does atrial fibrillation cause palpitations?

Palpitations means noticing your heartbeat more than usual. With atrial fibrillation, the rhythm may feel irregular, fluttering, thumping, or suddenly fast because the heart's upper chambers are not beating in a coordinated pattern. Episodes may last briefly or continue, and some people notice tiredness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or dizziness at the same time.

Stress, caffeine, fever, thyroid problems, anaemia, and other rhythm disturbances can also cause palpitations. A clinician may use an ECG or longer rhythm recording to match your symptoms with the heartbeat.

Stop strenuous activity, sit down, and note when the sensation started and whether the beat feels regular or uneven. Record possible triggers and accompanying symptoms. Take prescribed heart treatment as directed, and do not alter or stop it on your own. Arrange a medical review for new, repeated, prolonged, or worsening palpitations, even if they settle before the appointment.

Call emergency services if palpitations occur with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, severe dizziness, confusion, or new weakness on one side. Seek urgent assessment if the heartbeat remains very fast or irregular and you feel unwell. Avoid driving yourself during severe symptoms.
