Does atopic dermatitis cause itchy skin?

The sensation may range from a mild urge to scratch to persistent, distracting itch. It can affect dry or inflamed patches on the face, neck, hands, wrists, elbows, knees, or trunk. Scratching may temporarily relieve the feeling but can produce tiny skin breaks, bleeding, thickened skin, and more inflammation. Itch may flare with heat, sweat, dry weather, fragranced products, rough fabrics, or personal triggers.

Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a brief lukewarm bath or shower. Use gentle cleansers only where needed and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing. Soft clothing, trimmed nails, and a cool compress can help limit scratching. Follow any prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment as directed; do not add new products to a flare without checking whether they could irritate the skin.

Contact a healthcare professional if the itch is persistent, affects sleep or school, or is not improving with your established plan. Get prompt care for oozing, pus, yellow crusting, increasing tenderness, warmth, swelling, fever, or a fast change in the rash. Sudden facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs urgent attention.
