Does antenatal care package treat pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia involves high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy and may affect organs such as the kidneys or liver. Antenatal appointments can include blood-pressure checks, urine testing, blood tests, assessment of symptoms, and checks on your baby's growth and wellbeing. These visits help the maternity team judge whether continued observation is appropriate or whether medicines, hospital care, or birth planning is needed. The care package manages risk and detects change; it does not remove the underlying condition by itself.

Keep every scheduled maternity appointment and take prescribed blood-pressure medicine exactly as directed. Record symptoms and ask which readings or changes should prompt a call. Do not start supplements, stop medicine, or use home remedies without checking with your maternity team. If pre-eclampsia has been diagnosed, ask how often your blood pressure, urine, blood tests, and baby's growth will be reviewed.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for a severe or persistent headache, vision changes, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, vomiting, shortness of breath, feeling very unwell, vaginal bleeding, or reduced baby movements. These symptoms need prompt assessment because pre-eclampsia can worsen quickly, even when an earlier check was reassuring.

Ask what your blood-pressure target is, whether you need extra fetal monitoring, which symptoms matter overnight, and how the team will decide between continued monitoring and delivery.
