Does angioedema cause swollen lips?

Angioedema is swelling in deeper layers of the skin or mucous membranes. It can affect one or both lips and may also involve the eyelids, cheeks, tongue, hands, feet, or throat. The area can feel tight, warm, or uncomfortable; itching or raised hives may occur when an allergic reaction is involved. Episodes may follow food, a medicine, an insect sting, an infection, or physical triggers, while some episodes have no obvious trigger.

Ask what may have triggered the episode, whether your medicines could contribute, what symptoms should prompt emergency action, and whether you need an emergency plan. For recurring swelling without hives, ask whether further assessment is needed.
