Does amoebiasis cause diarrhoea?

Amoebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by a parasite. It can disturb the bowel lining and change how water is absorbed, leading to loose or frequent stools. Some people also have cramps, urgency, mucus, blood, fever, or discomfort when passing stool. Symptoms can be mild or more troublesome, and the pattern alone cannot confirm the infection. Other infections, food-related illness, medicines, and bowel conditions may cause diarrhoea too.

Replace lost fluids with frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, particularly after each loose stool. Continue light meals if you can tolerate them, and avoid preparing food for others while diarrhoea continues. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet. Contact a clinician if diarrhoea persists, returns after travel, or comes with blood, mucus, fever, or abdominal pain. A stool test may be needed before targeted treatment is chosen; do not use someone else’s medicine.

Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, become faint or confused, pass very little urine, have severe abdominal pain, or see blood or black stool. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with a weakened immune system should obtain medical advice early because dehydration can develop quickly.
