Does amoebiasis cause blood in stool?

Amoebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. It can irritate the bowel lining and produce ulcers, so stool may contain blood or mucus. Cramping, loose stools, urgency, and pain when passing stool may occur as well. The appearance of blood does not identify the cause by itself; infections, haemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, and other bowel problems can also lead to rectal bleeding.

Arrange a clinical assessment if you see blood in stool, especially with diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, or recent travel. A clinician may ask about food and water exposure, other unwell contacts, medicines, and symptom timing. Testing a stool sample can help identify an intestinal parasite and guide treatment. Drink fluids in small, frequent amounts while waiting for advice, and wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food. Do not start leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or repeated bleeding, black tar-like stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, faintness, confusion, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system should seek advice promptly because fluid loss can become serious more quickly.

Ask whether a stool test is needed, whether your symptoms fit amoebiasis or another cause of bleeding, which fluids and foods are suitable, and when you should return if the bleeding continues.
