Does allergic rhinitis cause sore throat?

Allergic inflammation swells the lining of the nose and increases mucus. That mucus may slide down the back of the throat, creating a scratchy feeling, frequent throat clearing or a cough. Sleeping with the mouth open can dry the throat and add discomfort. Itching, sneezing and watery eyes support an allergy pattern; fever, marked fatigue or swollen neck glands may point to an infection or another cause.

Reduce exposure to triggers such as dust, pollen or animal dander when you notice a pattern. Saline nasal rinsing can clear irritants and mucus, while drinking fluids and using a humidified room may soothe dryness. Arrange medical advice if the sore throat is severe, keeps returning, or does not settle as the nasal symptoms improve. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing throat or facial swelling, or a muffled voice. These features need assessment rather than self-treatment for allergies.
