Does allergic rhinitis cause itchy throat?

Allergic rhinitis inflames the nasal lining and can increase mucus. That mucus may slide down the back of the throat, causing a tickle, itch, frequent throat-clearing or a mild cough. Breathing through the mouth when the nose is blocked can dry the throat and add to the discomfort. The pattern may come with sneezing, watery eyes and a runny or stuffy nose. Sore throat with fever, strong pain or difficulty swallowing may point to another problem.

Sip water regularly and avoid smoke, vapour, strong fragrances and very dry air where possible. Try not to clear your throat repeatedly, as this can keep the tissues irritated; a drink or gentle swallow may be kinder. Limit contact with your known allergy triggers and wash your face after outdoor exposure. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss saline rinsing or allergy treatment suited to you.

Seek medical advice if the itch persists despite controlling nasal symptoms, keeps returning without a clear trigger or becomes painful. Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have noisy or difficult breathing, sudden swelling of the tongue or throat, or a rapidly spreading reaction. These warning signs need immediate assessment rather than an assumption of allergic rhinitis.
