Does allergic rhinitis cause headache?

Allergic inflammation can swell the nasal lining and make normal mucus drainage less effective. This may create a blocked, heavy feeling around the forehead, cheeks or bridge of the nose, with a dull headache that is more noticeable when congestion is strong. Headache may occur with sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, watery eyes and reduced airflow through the nose. Migraine, viral illness, dehydration, vision strain and other conditions can also cause headache, so the accompanying pattern is useful when working out the cause.

Try to identify and limit the exposure that brings on your nasal symptoms. Rest, drink enough fluid and use a clean saline nasal rinse if a pharmacist or clinician confirms it is suitable. Avoid smoke and strong scents, which can aggravate nasal irritation. Ask a healthcare professional about allergy treatment if congestion repeatedly brings headache, and follow the product instructions carefully rather than combining medicines without checking.

Get medical advice for a new or recurring headache that does not settle as the nasal symptoms improve, or for headache with fever, facial swelling, thick discharge or significant facial pain. Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, vision loss or trouble speaking. Those features need prompt assessment and should not be put down to allergic rhinitis.
