Does allergic rhinitis cause blocked nose?

When the nose encounters an allergen such as pollen, dust, mould, or animal dander, its lining can become inflamed and swollen. Extra mucus may narrow the nasal passages, making it harder to breathe through the nose. Congestion can shift from one side to the other or feel worse at night. Colds, sinus inflammation, irritants, structural problems, and some medicines can also block the nose, so congestion alone does not establish allergy.

Reduce contact with known triggers, keep bedroom fabrics clean, and rinse your face or change clothes after outdoor exposure if pollen affects you. Saline nasal rinsing may clear mucus when performed with safe, prepared water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or doctor can advise on antihistamines or a nasal spray. Follow the product directions and avoid prolonged use of decongestant sprays unless a clinician advises it.

Arrange an assessment if blockage persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, affects one side, causes recurrent nosebleeds, or comes with facial pain, fever, or a reduced sense of smell. Seek urgent help for swelling around the eyes, severe headache with illness, breathing difficulty, or a blocked nose after a significant injury.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergic rhinitis, which triggers may be involved, and whether a nasal spray or tablet is suitable. Tell the clinician how long the blockage has lasted, whether it is one-sided, what makes it worse, and which medicines or sprays you have already tried.
