Does allergic conjunctivitis cause itchy eyes?

An allergen can trigger inflammation on the clear surface of the eye and inside the eyelids. This releases substances that stimulate itching, so rubbing often makes the irritation worse. Both eyes may itch, water, or feel gritty, especially after exposure to pollen, dust, mould, or animal dander. Itchy eyes can also result from dry eye, irritation, eyelid inflammation, or infection, so persistent symptoms deserve an assessment.

Keep your hands away from your eyes and wash them regularly. A cool compress over closed eyelids may reduce the urge to rub. Sunglasses outdoors can limit contact with airborne triggers, and changing clothes after outdoor exposure may help some people. A pharmacist or doctor can recommend allergy treatment; avoid using someone else's eye drops or continuing drops that cause worsening discomfort.

Get urgent eye care for pain, strong light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, a foreign-body sensation that will not settle, or marked swelling. Contact lens wearers should seek prompt advice for a painful or red eye. Sudden vision loss, severe pain, or an eye injury requires immediate medical attention.

Ask which allergen may be contributing, whether your symptoms could be dry eye or infection, and which drops are suitable. Mention whether both eyes itch, when symptoms started, contact lens use, any new cosmetics, and whether vision or light sensitivity has changed.
