Does acute bronchitis cause coughing up phlegm?

Acute bronchitis inflames the airways and can increase mucus. Coughing helps clear that mucus, so sputum may come up during the illness. The amount and appearance can change as the airway irritation changes. Phlegm may be clear, white, yellow, or green; colour alone cannot tell whether the cause is bacterial or whether antibiotics are needed.

Coughing up phlegm has other possible causes, including pneumonia, asthma, smoking-related airway disease, and post-nasal drainage. The symptom does not by itself diagnose acute bronchitis. Breathing difficulty, chest pain, fever, and the course of illness help guide assessment.

Drink fluids if you can, rest, and avoid smoke, dust, and strong fumes. Do not suppress a productive cough with leftover prescription medicine. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable option if coughing prevents sleep, particularly if you have another lung condition or take regular medicines.

Arrange medical advice when phlegm is increasing, the cough is worsening, or symptoms are not settling. Describe its appearance and any change in breathing, energy, or chest discomfort rather than relying on colour as a diagnosis.

Seek urgent help for coughing blood, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, or severe chest pain. Prompt assessment is needed for dehydration, a high or persistent fever, or worsening symptoms after initial improvement.
