Does acid reflux cause indigestion?

Acid moving upward from the stomach can irritate the food pipe and create burning, upper abdominal discomfort, fullness, or an unpleasant taste. Reflux-related indigestion may appear after a large meal, when bending over, or when lying down. Gas, an ulcer, medicines, food intolerance, and other digestive conditions can produce similar symptoms, so the pattern matters.

Notice which meals and positions bring symptoms on. Smaller meals, eating slowly, staying upright after eating, and avoiding a personal trigger close to bedtime may help. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. A clinician or pharmacist can explain whether an antacid or acid-reducing medicine is suitable and how long to try it.

Arrange medical advice if indigestion keeps returning, is worsening, or does not settle with sensible measures. Seek urgent help for severe or persistent chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms need assessment rather than being assumed to be reflux.
