Does acid reflux cause chest pain?

Refluxed stomach contents can irritate the lining of the oesophagus, producing a burning or tight discomfort behind the breastbone. It may follow meals, worsen when lying down or bending, and occur with a sour taste, belching, or regurgitation. These features can fit reflux, but chest pain can also arise from the heart, lungs, muscles, or other causes. The feeling alone cannot identify its source.

If a clinician has previously linked your symptoms with reflux, keep meals moderate and remain upright after eating. Avoid lying down soon after food and track triggers such as late meals, alcohol, or particular foods. A pharmacist can explain suitable short-term relief. Do not use a presumed reflux explanation to delay assessment of a new chest symptom.

Call emergency services for chest pain that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by breathlessness, cold sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to an arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw. Get urgent advice for chest pain during exertion or with a sense of marked weakness. Even if you have reflux, a different cause can occur at the same time.
