Does abscess drainage treat cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a spreading infection in deeper layers of skin and soft tissue. It commonly causes expanding redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness, usually without a pocket that can be emptied. Abscess drainage targets a contained collection of pus, so it cannot replace the treatment selected for cellulitis.

A clinician may feel the area and look for a collection. If both conditions are present, the plan can include drainage for the collection plus treatment directed at the surrounding infection. The choice depends on the examination and your general health.

Arrange medical assessment rather than trying to drain swollen skin yourself. Marking the edge of redness with a pen can help you notice whether it is spreading while you wait, but it does not replace care. Keep the area clean, elevate an affected limb when comfortable, and take prescribed treatment as directed.

Seek prompt care for redness that is spreading, increasing warmth, worsening pain, fever, chills, swollen glands or red streaks. Get urgent help for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, rapidly worsening symptoms, or infection near the eye. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice early.

Ask whether the redness is cellulitis, whether a separate abscess is present, what treatment is needed, and how soon improvement should be reviewed. Ask which changes mean you should return urgently.
