Does abscess drainage help with painful skin?

An abscess is a collection of pus under the skin. Pressure inside the collection can make the surrounding skin swollen, warm, tender, or throbbing. A trained clinician may numb the area, make a small opening, allow the material to drain, and clean the space. Redness and soreness can still take time to settle, and drainage may not be suitable if the painful area is not an abscess.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut a suspected abscess at home because this can spread infection or injure nearby tissue. Keep any dressing clean and follow wound-care instructions after treatment. Take prescribed medicines as directed and attend a review if packing, a dressing change, or a further check is advised. Seek assessment if pain, swelling, or redness continues to increase.

Obtain urgent medical help if redness spreads quickly, red streaks move away from the area, fever or chills develop, pain becomes severe, the abscess is near the eye or spine, or you feel weak or confused. People with conditions or medicines that lower immune defences should seek advice promptly for a painful, infected-looking lump.
