Does a surgical oncology perform thyroid removal surgery?

The operation is called a thyroidectomy. Depending on the diagnosis and its location, the surgeon may remove part or all of the thyroid and may assess nearby lymph nodes. The exact specialist involved can vary by hospital and case; endocrine surgeons and ear, nose and throat surgeons also perform thyroid operations.

A surgical oncologist reviews imaging, examination findings and tissue test results to decide how much thyroid tissue should be removed. Planning also considers whether lymph nodes need evaluation and how closely the growth lies to the voice-box nerves and parathyroid glands, which help control calcium levels.

After a complete thyroid removal, thyroid hormone replacement is needed. After partial removal, the remaining thyroid may produce enough hormone, but blood tests are used to check. Temporary voice changes, neck discomfort and changes in calcium can occur, so the care team explains monitoring before discharge.

Bring your ultrasound reports, scan images, biopsy or needle-sample results, recent blood tests and a complete medicine list. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, supplements, previous neck operations, voice problems, thyroid medicines and any history of low calcium.

Confirm which medicines to take on the operation day, when to stop eating and drinking, and who will take you home. Arrange help during early recovery, and learn how the incision should be cared for. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the surgical or prescribing team gives specific instructions.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, heavy bleeding, collapse or severe difficulty swallowing. These symptoms require immediate assessment because swelling or bleeding in the neck can affect the airway.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, worsening redness or drainage at the incision, pain that is not controlled, persistent vomiting, or new tingling around the mouth or in the fingers. Tingling, cramping or muscle spasms can accompany low calcium and should be assessed without delay.

Ask whether partial or complete thyroid removal is proposed, whether lymph nodes may be removed, and what findings could change the plan during surgery. It is also useful to discuss voice-nerve monitoring, calcium checks, thyroid hormone treatment, pathology results and the follow-up schedule.
