Does radiology perform core needle biopsy?

The radiologist uses ultrasound, mammography, CT or another imaging method to locate the target and guide the needle. A pathology laboratory then examines the tissue; the radiologist does not determine the final tissue diagnosis during the procedure.

After confirming the correct site, the team cleans the skin and usually numbs the area with local anaesthetic. A small opening may be made so a hollow needle can remove narrow tissue samples. Imaging helps keep the needle aligned with the area being investigated.

You may notice pressure or a clicking sound from the sampling device. Staff place pressure and a dressing over the site afterwards. The details vary with the body region, depth of the target and imaging method, and some biopsies need additional monitoring or sedation.

Tell the radiology service about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding conditions, allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy and any earlier reaction to contrast or sedation. Follow their specific medicine and fasting instructions; do not stop prescribed blood thinners without an agreed plan.

Wear clothing that allows access to the biopsy area and arrange an escort if the service says sedation is planned. Afterward, keep the dressing and activity restrictions exactly as instructed. Confirm how results will reach you, which clinician will explain them and what to do if the report is delayed.

Contact the clinical team if the biopsy site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful, or if you develop fever or drainage. Apply firm pressure and seek urgent advice if bleeding continues through the dressing. Emergency care is needed for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or rapidly increasing swelling, particularly after a biopsy near the chest, neck or airway.

Ask which imaging method will guide the needle, whether local anaesthetic alone is planned and how long observation may be needed. Check which medicines to take that day, what activity limits apply, who will provide the pathology result and whether a marker may be left at the sampled site for future identification.
