Does a radiology perform chest x-ray?

A chest X-ray creates images of the lungs, heart area, ribs, and parts of the airways using a small amount of ionising radiation. You may stand or sit against the imaging plate, remove metal items, and hold your breath briefly while the image is taken. The radiologist looks for findings that may help explain symptoms such as cough, fever, chest pain, or breathlessness. A normal image cannot rule out every chest or heart problem, so symptoms and examination still guide care.

Tell staff if you might be pregnant, have difficulty standing, or cannot hold your breath. Wear clothing that allows easy positioning and follow the radiographer’s instructions. The examination itself is quick, but waiting for the report may take longer. Your clinician should explain why the image was requested and how the result fits with other findings; do not change treatment based on an image you have not discussed.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, sudden confusion, fainting, coughing up blood, or crushing chest pressure. Do not wait for a planned chest X-ray when these symptoms are present. Contact a clinician for a persistent cough, fever that is worsening, unexplained breathlessness, or chest pain that needs assessment.

Ask what concern the X-ray is assessing, whether pregnancy changes the plan, when the report will be available, and whether further imaging or follow-up is needed.
