What this means

An arthrogram combines a joint injection of contrast with imaging, such as magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography. The contrast can outline structures that are difficult to see on routine images, including cartilage, the labrum, or a joint capsule. A radiologist usually guides the needle, checks its position, and interprets the images.

The joint examined may be the shoulder, hip, wrist, or another area. You should tell the imaging team about pregnancy, allergies, kidney disease, blood-thinning medicine, infection, and previous reactions to contrast. The injection area can feel sore for a short time afterward.
