Does a podiatry perform custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are foot supports shaped or selected for your measurements, movement needs and footwear. A podiatry visit may include a history, foot examination, standing assessment and observation of walking. The clinician considers pressure areas, joint movement, balance, activity and the space inside your shoes. An insert is not suitable for every foot problem, and it should have a clear purpose such as changing load, supporting alignment or improving comfort. Fit and material can be adjusted after you try it.

Bring the shoes you wear for work, exercise and daily use, because an orthotic must fit the intended footwear. Explain your symptoms and what you have already tried. Ask how long to wear the device at first, what discomfort is expected, and when it should be reviewed. Stop and contact the clinic if rubbing, blistering, increasing pain or altered walking develops. Keep the device clean and inspect your skin if sensation is reduced.

Get prompt medical help for a new foot wound, spreading redness, fever, sudden severe pain, or a toe that becomes cold, pale or numb. People with diabetes, circulation problems or reduced sensation should seek advice early for skin changes rather than adjusting an insert repeatedly at home. Custom orthotics do not replace urgent assessment of an acute injury.
