Does a physiotherapy perform cupping therapy?

Short answer
A physiotherapist may perform cupping therapy when trained to do so and when it fits your assessment, symptoms and overall treatment plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- An adjunct that may accompany rehabilitation care
- Possible local effects
- Temporary marks, tenderness or irritation
What cupping involves
Cupping places cups on the skin to create suction. A physiotherapist may use it alongside movement exercises, soft-tissue work or education, rather than as the only treatment. The therapist should explain the purpose, check your skin and medical history, and obtain your agreement. Temporary circular marks, tenderness or skin irritation can occur. Wet cupping involves skin puncture and is different from dry cupping; clarify which method is being offered and who is qualified to provide it.
Before treatment
Tell the physiotherapist about broken or infected skin, eczema, easy bruising, bleeding problems, blood-thinning medicines, pregnancy and recent surgery. Do not place cups over an area that is numb or where you cannot reliably feel heat or pressure. Ask what aftercare is needed and how cupping connects with your exercise plan. Keep the area clean and report increasing redness, warmth, swelling or discharge.
When to seek prompt medical care
Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Obtain prompt medical advice if a treated area becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, develops pus, or you develop fever. Sudden weakness or new loss of bladder or bowel control also needs urgent assessment.
Questions to ask
Which type of cupping are you recommending, and what is its intended role? Is my skin and medical history suitable? What marks or reactions are expected, and when should I contact you?

Questions people ask
Will cupping replace physiotherapy exercises?
Usually it is considered an additional technique; exercises and activity advice may remain central to functional recovery.
Can cupping be used on broken skin?
Cups should not be placed over broken or infected skin, and wet cupping requires separate safety considerations.
