Does a pathology perform second opinion?

This is often called a pathology review. The reviewing pathologist may confirm the original interpretation, refine details such as tumour type or features, or recommend additional laboratory work before reaching an opinion.

The second pathologist examines the available glass slides and may also assess preserved tissue, special stains, molecular results, imaging context, and the original report. The scope depends on the question being asked and the material available. Review is particularly useful when the diagnosis is uncommon, the wording is uncertain, or a treatment choice depends on a specific pathological feature.

A second opinion is an independent interpretation, not a promise that the report will change. When opinions differ, the clinicians and pathologists can compare the findings, request more material, or discuss the case together before the care plan is finalised.

Ask your treating doctor which pathology question needs clarification and which specialist should review it. The receiving service commonly needs the original report and relevant slides or tissue blocks; these are usually transferred between laboratories rather than carried without instructions. Confirm where the written opinion will be sent and who will explain any effect on your treatment plan.

A pathology review does not treat urgent symptoms. Seek urgent medical care for severe breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, fainting, new confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. Separately, tell your oncology team promptly if treatment is due to begin, surgery is scheduled, or the sample transfer appears delayed, because they can decide whether the plan should wait for the review.

Ask what part of the diagnosis is being reconsidered, whether a pathologist with a particular area of expertise is needed, which materials will be transferred, whether further tests may use some of the stored tissue, and how both opinions will be reconciled if their wording differs.
