Short answer

A pain management service may provide a pain management programme through coordinated assessment and rehabilitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Your priorities and feedback help shape the programme.

What the programme may include

A pain management programme is a planned course for people whose pain continues to affect movement, sleep, work or daily activities. It may involve a pain clinician, physiotherapist, psychologist, occupational therapist or other professionals working toward shared goals. Sessions can cover pacing, strength and mobility, sleep routines, relaxation, medication understanding and ways to respond to pain flares.

The focus is usually on improving function and confidence while investigating and treating relevant medical causes. A programme is not a promise that pain will disappear. Your team should tailor activities to your health, physical ability, mood, medicines and responsibilities.

Making the first appointment useful

Write down how pain affects walking, sitting, sleep, concentration and personal care. Bring your medication list, diagnoses, scan reports and questions about previous treatment. Share goals that matter to you, such as returning to a hobby or managing a workday. Ask how attendance, home exercises and progress reviews are organised. Tell the team if an exercise increases symptoms sharply so the plan can be adjusted safely.

When to seek urgent care

A programme does not replace urgent assessment. Seek immediate medical help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, sudden weakness, severe chest pain, serious injury, fever with severe pain, or thoughts of harming yourself. Contact your treating team promptly if pain, medication effects or mood symptoms deteriorate quickly.

Questions to ask

Ask: Which professionals will be involved? What goals will we measure? How will medicines be reviewed? What can I practise between sessions? How will you adapt the programme during a flare, and who should I contact with concerns?

Questions people ask

Is a pain management programme only for people considering surgery?

No. It is a non-surgical approach that can support people with persistent pain and different diagnoses or treatment plans.

What happens if an exercise makes my pain worse?

Tell the team. They can review the movement, dose or pacing and check whether another medical issue needs attention.
