Does a neurosurgery perform microdiscectomy?

Microdiscectomy is a spine procedure used to remove a small portion of a slipped or herniated disc that is irritating or compressing a nearby nerve. The goal is usually to relieve nerve-related symptoms such as pain travelling down an arm or leg, tingling, numbness, or weakness. A neurosurgeon is trained to assess and operate on the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, including the nerves affected by disc problems. The name of the department matters less than the surgeon’s specific experience with the spine and the type of disc problem you have.

A consultation does not automatically mean that surgery is needed. The surgeon may review your symptoms, examine strength and sensation, and compare those findings with imaging. Treatment decisions can also consider how long symptoms have lasted, whether they are limiting movement, and whether non-surgical care has helped.

Ask for an appointment with a neurosurgeon or an orthopaedic spine surgeon who regularly treats disc-related nerve compression. Bring your scan reports and images if available, a list of medicines, and a brief record of when the symptoms began and how they affect walking, lifting, sleeping, or work. Tell the clinician about previous physiotherapy, injections, or other treatments and what changed afterward.

Before choosing a surgeon, ask whether the proposed procedure matches the level and side of the disc problem, what other options are reasonable, and what recovery may involve. A second opinion can be useful when the diagnosis or treatment plan is unclear.

Seek urgent medical assessment if back pain with leg symptoms is accompanied by new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening weakness. These symptoms can signal serious nerve compression and should not wait for a routine surgical appointment. Sudden severe pain after a major injury, fever with significant back pain, or feeling seriously unwell also warrants prompt assessment.
