Does a midwifery perform membrane sweep?

During an examination, the midwife gently places a finger through the cervix and separates the membranes from the lower part of the uterus. This may release local hormones and can sometimes encourage labour to begin. It is different from breaking the waters. You may feel pressure or cramping, and light spotting can happen afterwards. Your midwife should explain why it is being offered, check that it is suitable, and stop if you ask.

Ask what your midwife expects to learn from an examination and whether another option is available. Tell the maternity team about bleeding, fluid leakage, painful contractions, a known placenta problem, or any advice you have received about avoiding vaginal examinations. Wear comfortable clothing and arrange time to rest afterwards if you develop cramps. A sweep is optional, so consent can be withdrawn before or during the appointment.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement, fever, or fluid that may be your waters. Seek urgent help if you feel faint or seriously unwell. Mild cramps and a small amount of spotting may occur after a sweep, but symptoms that are worsening or concerning should be assessed.
